Institute of Wood Technology and Wood Biology
- Wood has experienced a multifaceted renaissance within the 21st century. It has remained indispensable as basic material, for construction and as a fuel. Wood is renewable, it acts as a carbon sink and constitutes a requested source for biobased high-valued products.
- Our scientists do research all around a sustainable use of wood and its components. Our aim is a responsible, efficient, and forward-looking application of wood.
- The results of our work provide both a basis for decision-making aids for politics and support consumer protection as well as economy.
Cooperation with the University of Hamburg
- The vTI Institute Wood Technology and Wood Biology closely cooperates with the activity fields mechanical- and chemical technology as well as wood biology of the Wood Science Centre of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences of Hamburg University. The study course “Wood Science and Technology” is jointly conducted by both units.
- This study course is supported by the promoter organisations “Bund Deutscher Holzwirte” and „Gesellschaft der Förderer und Freunde des Zentrums Holzwirtschaft an der Universität Hamburg“.

The Wood out of the water
- A new assortment of traded timbers, called "wood out of reservoirs" has hit the headlines of international wood market in the last years. It is known that in some reservoirs extensive volumes of timbers are stocked, which is hermetically sealed since decades. The development of new techniques offers the ability to open up and harvest these volumes. There are already the first contingents of timbers from the Brokopondomeer barrier lake (Surinam) commercially available. This wood is solicited as timber with unmodified wood properties.
