Institute of Sea Fisheries
Fisheries is one of the most important factors influencing structure and function of marine ecosystems. It has direct impacts on exploited and unexploited species, as well as their habitats.
- We provide research on ecological and economic principles underlying sustainable exploitation of natural marine resources.
- Our main areas of operation are the North Sea, the North Atlantic and the Atlantic parts of the Antarctic Ocean.
- We provide support science based fisheries management to guide decision-making of the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) in relation to the Common Fisheries Policy of the European Union (CFP) and international marine conventions.
- Based on our research, we contribute to the advice on fish stocks and marine ecosystems provided by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and the Scientific, Technical and Economic Committee on Fisheries of the European Commission (STECF).
