The use of a lysimeter has a century-long tradition in the forest hydrological research of the region of Eberswalde. Lysimeters are boxes filled with soil which allow the quantity and quality of water percolating through this soil to be measured. They are used to determine the mass and water balance of vegetation, vegetation blankets and other coverings. Simplified, a lysimeter is a plant pot of respectable size. The largest lysimeter we use allows the water consumption of full-grown trees to be assessed. The Instiute posses:
