Institute of Fisheries Ecology
We investigate and observe the marine ecological system and the German fresh waters. We focus on the relationship between the fish and its environment. We analyze natural and anthropogenic factors of influence like climate change and pollution on the health status and on the reproduction ability of fish. We investigate the genetic variety and the biodiversity. We develop environmental indicators, which serve as starting point for the risk evaluation of aquatic ecological systems. These work is connected to the common fishery politics as well as to the sea politics of the European Union.
We develop a sustainable aquacultural production under consideration of ecological aspects and animal health. We raise stock assessment data from diadrome fish, in particular the eel. The work is integrated in European-wide co-ordinated activities of the management of this endangered species.
