Monitoring and assessment
One of the core tasks of the institute is the data acquisition on the fish stocks of the high seas. In particular these are the data on age, growth, maturity of cod, herring sprat and flounder.

Management of living resources
One of the core tasks of the institute is providing advice to the political bodies with respect to the management of fish stocks, in particular those of the Baltic Sea.

Fishery and Environment
The increasing industrial utilization of the sea requires extensive new research of the institute on the environmental effects of these activities on the fish stocks.

Fish stock recruitment
The fishery makes use of a natural resource with a catch rate that is directly dependent on the number of recruits.

Fishery- & survey-technology
Preparation and maintenance of fishery- and survey technologies.

Advice and public relations
The advice for political bodies and public relations are a core task of the Institute for Baltic Sea Fisheries.
