Walther Herwig III, 342nd cruise
Duration
2011, February 26th - April 21st
Area
Sargasso Sea (West Atlantic)
An ongoing sea diary will inform you about the expedition.
Cruise purpose
Studies on the reproduction biology of the European eel in the central Sargasso Sea.
The distribution and abundance of early developmental stages of European eels (Anguilla anguilla) in the central Sargasso Sea will be studied. In addition to planktological studies (use of the Isaac-Kidd Mid-Water Trawl method and the Isaac Kidd-Nets method), oceanographic data will also be collected to better define the eels’ spawning area and to characterize the relevant abiotic factors.
In addition, pelagic trawl nets will be used to survey the composition of the fish fauna in the spawning area of European and American eels. Also, prematured eels equipped with satellite senders will be released to the west and south of Bermuda in order to study the travelling routes and behaviour in the spawning area.
